Toni Phillips Interview
Welcome to citydrinking’s newest feature. This month we met up with Radio Presenter and TV personality Toni Phillips. She talked to us at citydrinking about working for Kiss FM, Capital Radio, and Nuts magazines new venture, Nuts TV. She also tells us where she likes to go out, what she likes to drink and about her love of Britney Spears!
What show do you present on Capital FM?
I do Friday and Saturday nights, kind of party Capital for people on their way out or who are at home and not going out. So it’s a kind of soundtrack, yeah just weekends at the moment.
Why did you join Capital FM from Kiss 100 FM?
Because Capital’s bigger and better.
How did you start in broadcasting?
I started at my local radio station, just doing one day a week and kind of said “im not going anywhere so give me a job”
As a trained actress do you have any plans to do some more acting?
Yes i would love to get back into acting, that was what i wanted to do but i wouldn’t of made it at the moment, so i guess i’ll just stick with it and we’ll see. I did a panto not long ago so maybe that will be my way back in; pantomines with Dean Gaffney.
What music do you like on a night out?
On a night out I like listening to everything on the Capital playlist (laughs), so anything commercial.
What are your plans over the next year?
um, well we’re starting the Capital thing and hopefully do some more shows on Capital and get back to doing daytimes which was what i was doing at Kiss and we’ll see what happens with the tv, because i’ve started doing Nuts TV, maybe um carry on with the tv thing. I don’t know, i never know what im going to be doing so whatever comes across.
Where do you spend your free time?
Well I don’t really have much spare time when it comes to nights out, because obviously im working Friday nights and Saturday nights. So pubs really and stuff, I haven’t been to a club for ages.
What are the must visit places in London?
Must visit places are usually where me or the other Capital dj’s are djing, gigs are good.
Do you get to see much live music with your busy schedule?
At Capital now I’ve got a new producer for the weekend show and we are really going to be focusing on going to a lot of gigs, going and seeing a lot of dj’s; not just like well known bands, but up and coming bands and stuff, so we are going to be doing a lot of gigs in the next sort of few months and in the future.
Is there any one venue you go for a drink regularly?
Um, no (laughs) , no it always changes, no i’m not telling you where I prop up the bar.
You’re from the south coast, where do you go when you visit?
When I go back to the south coast just pubs, and wherever my friends are, just pubs really there isn’t much of a club life there, there’s no nightclubs, not that you would want to visit anyway (laughs), yeah so just bars and pubs.
What annoys you about bars/clubs and restaurants?
The thing that annoys me the most about bars & clubs now is that you can’t smoke and sometimes, probably (laughs) the toilets they’re a bit gross.
Which public figure would you most like to have a drink with?
That’s easy, (laughs) if I had to go for a drink or a night out with anyone it would definitely be Britney Spears, because she’s cool, because I love her.
What do you think of the Smoking Ban?
The smoking ban sucks, it’s good, I understand why they’ve done it and im all for it, but it does ruin a night out when you have to stand outside and smoke. But it’s quite sociable standing outside and smoking, but it has encouraged me to try and give up, but it hasn’t happened yet.
What are your favourite memories from your time at Kiss 100 FM?
Probably, working at Kiss, um, i don’t know, The Kiss Awards, that was pretty cool when we did the Kiss Awards. I got to go on stage and present with Big Ted and then I used to do all the interviews backstage and after the Kiss awards we all went and had a big party at Craig Davids’ house, that was pretty cool.
Any good nights out you can recall?
Um, I don’t really remember most of my nights out, because I drink too much, ummm good nights out - yeah i’ve had a few at some like poncy places like China Whites and stuff, had some good nights there, just no I don’t really remember that much (laughs).
You were recently in the US, how does their nightlife compare to the UK?
Not really that different, I went to a lot of places that were similar kind of to places here in London, it was cheaper and it was much nicer to smoke because it was warmer. But no it wasn’t really that different, it was really similar to going out in London.
Can you tell us more about Onch Jewellery and the the recent modelling for Onch you did?
Onch jewellery is cool, I got involved with the whole Onch thing because I saw Kate Moss wearing it. So I contacted Onch and she sent us a load of Onch jewellery to Kiss and I’ve stayed friends with her ever since. I wouldn’t really say i kind of modelled, I did a shoot and she used the photo’s and stuff, but she has some real wacky models, real crazy people modelling, you should see the latest guy. Yeah Onch is cool, I love her jewellery, it’s really different, it’s cool and i’m just trying to bring it to the UK, just trying to help out.
What is Nuts TV and what will you be presenting?
Nuts TV is a new channel that is available on Freeview. It’s sort of similar to the magazine although they’re just using the same brand as the magazine. I do the film reviews, so I go and watch a lot of movies so im just going to be watching a lot of movies and reviewing them on a Friday night and that’s it. I’m not really on for that long, it’s a new channel, hopefully it will do really well and it’s live tv which I think if you want to get in to television you have to have that experience, so it will be good for me hopefully. Yeah so it’s all new, it’s the first one this week so fingers crossed.
