Headphones & Heels - Kellie Acreman
City Drinking recently met with Glamour Model and headlining DJ Kellie Acreman to ask her about her rise as DJ, her upcoming residency at The Ministry of Sound with Lauren Pope, the Headphones & Heels tour and of course where she likes to go out and what she likes to drink. Check out what Kellie had to say…
You are a successful model & DJ, which do you get more excited about? Why?
I defo get more excited about the dj’ing! With modelling you’re normally in a studio, posing for the camera for hours, it can get pretty boring. I do love modelling, don’t get me wrong but the dj’ing beats it by far. We get to go to some amazing countries that I would never of been to if I hadn’t become a dj. It’s such a buzz dj’ing to a big crowd knowing they’re loving your music.. We have a lot of fun.
What music do you prefer to play?
I love house music so that’s what I play all the time..
Is that the same music you like to hear when you go out?
Yeah. I think I have good taste in music and I know what people want to hear on a night out, I know what tracks will get the party started and will get everyone on the dance floor.
How did you get into DJ’ing?
I used to go along to Laurens gigs with her, then I came up with the idea of us doing it together, I thought it would be a good idea as no other girls were dj’ing at the time. I had always been into
dj’in but never thought I’d be able to do it as it looked quite hard. I started practicing every day on Lauren’s decks and soon got the hang of it, then I signed exclusively with the agency Vital Music along with Lauren.
When were you most nervous – before you’re first modeling assignment or before your first live DJ set?
Definitely the dj’ing 100% I always get butterflies before my set. The music has to be perfect, you have to please the crowd, you just want everyone to have a great time and party, the pressure’s always on.
You have both received a significant amount of media attention over a
number of years, how do you deal with the positive & negative reaction?
I’ve never really been talked about in the press so it doesn’t really affect me. People know me for my modeling and seeing me in magazines so it’s just normally a pic of me in a mag with a little write up. Luckily I’ve had no bad press.
Where can people see you dj’ing at the moment?
We’re dj’ing all over the world at the moment. We have our new residency at Ministry of Sound coming up with Headphones & Heels & Glam Roc on the 21st of June which we’re excited about, we’re also off to Corfu and Egypt and have another residency starting end of June at the rainforest café in London, again with the Headphones & Heels brand, amongst many other places!
What are your summer plans?
We’re so busy with work this summer.. We’ve been booked for Dubai, china, Egypt, Corfu so it looks like we’re going to be doing a lot of traveling!! No time to fit in a girly holiday just yet. We also have other plans which we’ll be working on too in other areas – watch this space….
There has been a recent focus on the rise of ‘binge drinking’ and
drunken behavior amongst women – why do you think this is?
I think the press like to focus on young female celebs, falling out of nightclubs drunk and people like to follow that. I think most of the people I hang out with would be classed as ‘binge drinkers’ as they don’t drink during the week, it’s purely a social thing when we go out and party. I think it’s important to know your limits though and know when to stop – which we do of course!
Where do you like to go on a night out?
At the moment we love Crystal on a Weds night. We went there last night to party with Lindsey Lohan and we had such a good time! The music and atmosphere’s perfect, everyone just has a wicked night and there’s never any attitude or trouble in there.
What do you tend to drink on a night out?
Vodka and Cranberry, Champagne and Shots! Ha-ha
Where is your favorite city to go out?
I think Miami’s such a cool place to party! It seems like everyone’s partying 24/7! We are aiming to go over to DJ as soon as possible.
Do you have plans to DJ abroad more often or are you going to focus on the UK?
Both really – although we are abroad an awful lot. We love going to other countries, we always have a laugh and seem to get ourselves in funny situations.. We want a camera crew to follow us as we think it’d make great TV!
What other projects are you working on?
We’ve got so much in the pipeline, we’re working on some music projects at the moment, we also have a slot on a new radio show and there’s also some TV shows coming up.. We want to do as much as possible.
How long is your residency at The Ministry of Sound?
Hopefully it’ll carry on for a while as long as everyone enjoys the night and I’m sure they will!
You are going on tour soon, where are you going and how long is the tour?
It’s all in the planning stages at the moment, but it is worldwide and should go on for at least a couple of months.
