Explorers discover 100 year old Whisky

A search for 100 year old Scotch Whisky and Brandy have been recovered from the Antartic by a team sent by Whyte & Mackay.

Whyte & Mackay sent a team from the New Zealand Antartic Heritage Trust to fnd and recover the bottles which had been previously found under a huts floorboards in 2006 but could not be moved from the ice. The bottles were left behind in the hut by Ernest Shackleton had stayed during his abandoned exploration of Antartica between 1907-1909. The salvage team had expected to find 2 crates but were amazed to find 5 crates of McKinlay & Co Whisky wth team leader Al Fastier saying “The unexpected find of the brandy crates, one labelled Chas. Mackinlay & Co and the other labelled The Hunter Valley Distillery Limited Allandale (Australia) are a real bonus”.

The Heritage Trust drilled through the ice to recieve some bottles but left the rest as part of the agreed upon guidelines between 12 Antartic treaty nations. Whyte & Mckay who launched the search and own the McKinlay & Co brand wanted to take samples in order to see if it is worth relaunching the product.

Richard Paterson described the discovery as “a gift from the heavens for whisky lovers. If the contents can be confirmed, safely extracted and analysed, the original blend may be able to be replicated. Given the original recipe no longer exists, this may open a door into history.”
