Hangover Cure may end ‘the morning after effect’

Scientists from South Korea have developed a ‘hangover cure’ which may put an end to those painful next mornings.

By adding extra oxygen to drinks the scientists found that the body was able to metabolise the alcohol faster, disposing of the alcohol faster and therefore cutting down on the after effects. Healthy humans partcipants were given between 240ml and 360ml drinks which contained 19.5% alcohol by volume, which all had differing amounts of oxygen added to them.

The scientists documented ther results in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, and they showed those participants which consumed the more highly oxygenated drinks recovered at a faster rate and saw their blood alcohol levels return to normal at a quicker rate.

The researchers; In-hwan Baek, Byung-yo Lee and Kwang-il Kwon of Chungnam National University’s College of Pharmacy concluded that “Elevated dissolved oxygen concentrations in alcoholic drinks accelerate the metabolism and elimination of alcohol. Thus, enhanced dissolved oxygen concentrations in alcohol may have a role to play in reducing alcohol-related side effects and accidents.”

However the negative side was that the addition of extra oxygen reduced the length of time people could drunk for which could have a bad effect on your health as you drink more or at least on your wallet.

Since the results have been published a Korean drinks company have developed a ‘soju’ drink called O2 lin which the company say “helps clarify your brain, energises your body cells, and maintains healthy and resilient skin”.
