Product Review - Caorunn

Caorunn

Caorunn is a handcrafted, small batch distilled Scottsh Gin infused with six traditional and five Celtic botanicals, using pure grain spirit and Scottish Highland water. Drawing on Celtic tradition we created a crisp and dry naturally balanced gin.

The Celtic botanicals in Caorunn are Heather, Bog Myrtle, Rowan Berry, Dandelion, Coul Blush Apple.

CITY DRINKING Review

The appearance of Caorunn is stunning. Unique, modern and stylish the red star symbol, which we can only assume reflects the 5 Celtic botanicals, in the middle of the bottle is a small but effeective touch which draws your eye to the bottle. The shape of the bottle with it’s 5 pointed base and star emboss on the bottom is another subtle but beautiful and carefully constructed feature to the design. The overall design looks like a product you would see in South East Asia, with it’s deft touches, sharp lines and clarity.

The lid is almost simple and refined, with a cork style fitting and as you pull the ‘cork’ from the bottle the air fills with aromatic botanical tones. The phrase “Oh My God!” was uttered as the lid was opened by the CITY DRINKING team as the strong fragrant rich, subtley spiced floral perfume flowed from the bottle. When you take into account the amount of infusions in Caorunn gin it is very impressive how one doesn’t overpower the rest or create a distasteful smell but blend well to create a rounded, single, unified tone.

The initial taste you get is a spiced sensation which tingles across your lips and tickles your tongue. Warm and smooth the smell that came from the bottle is ever present in the flavour, initially floral there is a fruity touch which comes through in the aftertaste with a sweet crisp finish the flavour is delicate but the complexity of the botanical blend proves worthy of the effort involved in production as you get a long length with a nice change of flavour from the spice, to the smooth floral flavour to the final fruity sweet finish. It is the refreshing quality of the highland water and sweet finish which makes Caorunn a spirit you can take sip after sip and can sit back and enjoy without the necessary need for other flavours from juices or mixers to quell the throat drying, neutral flavour you can get from other gins.

Caorunn works really well on its own, over ice or with an effervescent, but is also ideal in cocktails as it will add to the flavour rather than just attributing an alcoholic quantity.

Flavoursome, smooth, light and stylish
